Nommus 0
There are tons of example Ubot scripts here on the forum, a great resource for anyone just learning, so thanks to all that provide code. But... There is never a specificed license for the code Which means by default it is copyright... all of it even the subs provided as sticky threads. That might have less licensing problems for people creating bots for personal use, but I have a feeling everyone might think if they create something useful there might be some commercial value even to a reseller if you don't want to sell the bots yourself. If the source code is given a specific license, then something like GPL allows free use, but also confers an obligation to share alike, which often doesn't happen. If I download some code here, modify it, legally I have a feeling I am on shakey ground even reposting a modified bot in the same thread the original was posted. Is there a post somewhere that states that all source code posted is public domain so it can be used freely without obligation? That would probably be the best license to avoid all complications. That would mean that even if you took someone else's bot, compiled it and sold it, you wouldn't have to give them credit in any way, but at the same time it is legally safe. This should certainly be made very clear on anything that is posted with the intent for everyone to use it.

alcr 135
Yeah I think the law in america says that you kinda need to contact the author of the script. But putting it up here as an author is pretty much like saying 'hey this is free for anyone to use'
Joe118 3
Any code I've posted or will post in the forum is free to use for any purpose unless specifically stated otherwise in the specific post where that code appears. No need to contact me.
Nommus 0
So maybe put a general default license by the attachment form for posts of Public Domain or maybe MIT with a link - something that doesn't force inheritance of the same terms. If someone wants a different license for their code samples they have to specify it in the post and within the download files as an extra file in a zip so it can't be missed. Make sure any existing code especially subs that are sticky have a very clear license and that the code doesn't inherit something that could be problematic such as GPL
alcr 135
I think this is pretty much a non existing problem. Uploading your script here implicates that it is okay for everyone to use. Plus that no one could track that YOU stole that part of the script since pretty much anyone can do the same type of script in no time.
