I didn't quite understand all that.

 

I did get a great answer from Meter which helped me clarify this for me.

 

"#1 Private socks proxies let you use protocols other than HTTP. For example, you use a protocol called "POP3" when you login to Gmail servers with POP. If you want to cloak your IP when using POP, you must use socks proxies.

Socks proxies != VPN

Socks proxies != Browser proxies, but can be used as browser proxies (since HTTP is just another protocol, just like POP)"
